Artificial Intelligence (AI) trends in the last five years
Automation Intelligence is becoming a part of our life, whether it could be personal or professional. Whenever we read or watch any news on TV, we hear concerning Artificial Intelligence (AI) at least once in a day.
What is Artificial Intelligence? How to find various patent filing trends? In a nutshell, it refers to the machines that are programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions.
This article discusses various artificial intelligences and patent filing trends in the last five years in the field of AI where the technology focus has been so far, which companies/countries are investing in Artificial Intelligence and what we can expect in the future.
OVERALL PATENTING TRENDS:
If we can observe from patent filing trends, there has been an improvement of 57% increase in number of patents published from 2017 to 2018, more than 25000 patents are filled till May 5, 2019, and going by the trends we can anticipate additional 40% growth in this year 2019. All in all, we can see how rapid AI has been growing, and statistics justify that trend.
The major technical fields in AI subdivided into machine learning, neural networks, and deep learning. The majority of patents are focussed on machine learning algorithms and devices using it. When it comes to deep learning and neural networks, the majority of the patents are related to deep neural network, artificial neural network, residual neural network, and other models which predict various types of cancer. Image data patents are mainly concentrated on recognition features in the image—for example, facial expression and detection of objects in the images. Processing data patents are mainly related to data pre-processing, data cleansing, and obtaining datasets, etc.
When it comes to countries that are researching into AI domain and patents, China and the USA are investing more and more into the automation field, and in fact, there is a lot of competition between these countries regarding research in AI. These countries are trying to include AI into their defense, robotics, facial recognition, and training staff in relevant skills. When it comes to companies, IBM, Microsoft, Google are focussing their work on personalized Ads, improving search results, recognizing and labeling persons, speech recognition, virtual assistance, and making products smarter. Samsung is more interested in robotics and making AI available in TVs, refrigerators, washing machines, and IoT devices.
All in all, we can see how significant the growth has been in Artificial Intelligence. What we did not see is applications related to autonomous vehicles, augmented reality, and virtual reality. We can expect more in these fields soon and much more in home automation, Internet of Things (IoT), industrial manufacturing, 3D printing, and various other fields.
