What is a Copyright?

A copyright is a form of protection provided by the U.S Copyright Office to authors of "original works of authorship”. An author of a copyrighted work can prevent others from copying, performing or otherwise using the work without the author's consent.

To obtain a copyright, the work must be more than an idea. It must be fixed in a "tangible form of expression". This is because a copyright does not protect an idea; it protects the expression of that idea.

Copyright Protection

  • Literary works
  • Musical works, including lyrics
  • Dramatic works, including music
  • Choreographic works
  • Motion pictures
  • Sound recordings
  • Pictorial, graphic, sculptural and architectural works
